Border Crossing: Resist the Shuttle when crossing from San Diego to Tijuana

Traveling to Tijuana from San Diego can require as little forethought as having that fourth drink on Friday night. You know, that one that put you over the edge? Yeah, I saw that. So while a well-planned trip to Mexico is a great idea, take it from the gal who’s has done this twice on a whim: It’s totally doable with no plan at all. Crossing from San Diego to Tijuana is no problemo.

Start your jaunt on the right foot by throwing up a (metaphorical) middle finger at the shuttle bus. Many a novice has faltered here and succumbed to the sirens’ song. Resist! The ride will ultimately take you longer than skipping it. When you reach the border you still have to get out and cross over on foot, so you’ve saved no time and cost yourself money. Unless you have a bunch of extra time to kill and money to burn, taking transport over the border is just pointless.

Here’s a few tips for quick trip there and back:

  1. Don’t forget your passport!
  2. Pay attention to San Diego rush hour traffic.
  3. The Las Americas Outlet Mall (4211 Camino De La Plaza) is adjacent to the border crossing, so go buy a coffee and park for free.
  4. Crossing just requires a short walk, filling out one form and showing your passport.
  5. Once you’re through, follow the footpath bridge over the highway. Shrug off all the offers from taxis —  it’s quicker to walk.
  6. Head left to hit up a wonderful little street market.
  7. Head right towards the giant arch and the sign that says “Bienvenidos Tijuana B.C. Mexico”. This will take you to the foot of Avenida Revolucion.
  8. Avenida Revolucion has all the basics — pharmacies, bars, pharmacies, shops, pharmacies and, of course, pharmacies. Stay on this street for an easy and safe day trip to Mexico.
  9. Heading back is even easier, as signs and arrows pointing to the U.S.A are all over. Just use the giant arch as a landmark.

  1. Hahaha, oh yeah, Tijuana. Somehow we entered without realizing we’ve crossed the border; of course, they haven’t stamped us so we were technically illegal and had to sneak back to into the US with the tail between our legs and cross again, properly. Any ideas why we are such a border crossing disaster? (I blame it on the husband.)
